About Lake Phosphorus
Please take a few moments to read this fact sheet about the mineral phosphorus that sometimes finds its way into the lake. It is important because it is a plant nutrient or fertilizer. Aquatic weeds and algae, like land plants, require minerals from the soil to grow. Just like land plants, aquatic plants respond to fertilizer by growing thicker, taller, bushier, and more widespread. More>>

Stop the Tax Shift
| As you may have noticed, there is a new "Stop the Tax Shift" button on the home page of the Village's website While the outcomes of these upcoming events remain to be seen, the deficit reduction initiatives proposed by the Governor in mid-November - including a current year and 2009-10 decrease in AIM funding for 33 cities, a current year reduction of $41 million in New York City's AIM amount, and a 50% reduction in VLT Impact Aid - are on hold, at least for now. This lull in the action provides the perfect opportunity to remind our state leaders that they cannot balance the state budget at the expense of local governments and their taxpayers. Mayors Report October 6, 2008
Our economy is in disarray and we are witness to some of the most troubling times to face our nation since the Great Depression nearly 80 years ago। Skyrocketing fuel costs, ever increasing health care costs, increasing mortgage foreclosures and bank failures are but a few of the problems we are all facing. And yet, despite all these woes, we must continue to move forward as individuals and as a Village community. In these turbulent financial times I would like to assure the Village residents that the Village of Greenwood Lake is secure. Our budget is currently in very good shape with indebtedness in our general fund of 1.8% or $57,000. The forward thinking and hard work of members of this board reduced taxes for our 2008/2009 budget. The action taken to consolidation the services of our Department of Public Works has improved efficiencies within our Village and saved the Village taxpayers dollars that is better used in their households. Quality of life projects that are scheduled for our Village, Helen Kelly Field, Senior Center Park and building upgrades, Children’s playground at Lions Field are being paid for through grants applied for and awarded to the Village without using Village taxpayer dollars. Our municipal water utility, not supported by property taxes and must be funded on its own. This utility has been in need of upgrades due to the lack of maintenance in the plant and its distribution system the first 10 years of operation (the plant has been in operation for 12 years.) Due to the efforts of this board the water utility has been awarded a $200,000 appropriation from Senator Morahan and funding from the State of New York has been applied for and we have received notice that we have been approved. This project to repair and make the plant efficient is estimated to cost $400,000 to $500,000. The engineers of this project Malcolm Pirnie will have firm cost estimates and the project report to us by the first week of November. These are no ordinary times but are times that bring a community together. We are a Village that is moving forward and I am honored to serve as its Mayor.
